Kuinka suppeaksi Rocketline Oy:n julkaisukatalogi aikoinaan jäi? Käsittääkö FIxgalleriaan koottu kolmen kopla ko. julkaisukatalogia kokonaisuudessaan? Muistan omistaneeni vanhaan hyvään aikaan vain Death Carries a Cane'n.

Soittakaa joku Guiness'iin, taitaa tulla ennätys. Sentään noin suppeaksi uskonut. Tuo tarrapolitiikka tuli yllätyksenä niin ikään. Death Carries a Cane taisi olla painettu, näin ainakin muistelen.

"Eisenstein does it with cuts, Max Ophuls does it with fluid movement. Chaplin does it with nothing. Eisenstein seems to be all form and no content, Chaplin is all content and little form. Nobody could have shot a film in a more pedestrian way than Chaplin. Nobody could have paid less attention to story than Eisenstein. Alexander Nevsky is, after all, a pretty dopey story. Potemkin is built around a heavy propaganda story. But both are great filmmakers."

Etiketti kuitenkin painettu Rocketline. Kansi ilmeisesti Curly alunperin mikäli tarran alta/läpi oikein tiirailin.

I recently discovered some info which might be of interest to the tape collectors/historians here...

Back in 1997 I went travelling around Europe and ended up, for one weekend, in Stockholm to visit my cousins who live there. The flat where I stayed belonged to my uncle an Italian chap who married a Swedish woman and settled there in the early 70's.

His apartment was a real time capsule of a distributor from back in the day... old 'piano key' vhs players, stacks of u-matic tapes, film posters (I snagged four Lenzi locandinas from there, now framed and stuck in a loft back home in the UK)... and unfolded, unused video sleeves - mostly Fletcher/Techno video. My uncle was clearly someone who didn't throw anything away, everything was covered in dust - lots of dust.

Well... I've pondered his set up for well over a decade - sure, he was a distributor but I had no idea what labels he worked with or dealt with. No idea at all - I've only bumped into him half a dozen times in the time that's passed at family gatherings here and there...

On Easter Sunday I finally got the chance to sit down and have a chat with him and see what he remembered. I started by asking what labels he distributed? (I remembered a box of tapes on the Swedish NMP label that was in his flat, for example) The short answer is that he didn't distribute any labels at all in Scandinavia... well, not quite:

His foray into VHS dealing began in 1979 in Stockholm when a friend of his got him interested in this new emerging technology... Realising there was money to be made in this new market he would travel down to Italy and purchase u-matic tapes (masters) with 5 year territory rights for Sweden, Finland, Norway, Denmark and (of all places...) Iceland. For a number of years there was only him and another Italian who would travel down to Italy and purchase films and then sell them to distributors back in Sweden/etc. He didn't distribute any labels himself, as mentioned, he was the person supplying the masters/rights and negotiating with the Italians. The average film would cost him (in todays cash) around about 4000 Euros and he would then sell them on for 4500. His customers were mostly after westerns and 'action' films (read into that what you will... 'action' seems to cover a large range of genres). He purchased films from Medusa and a company called Luciano (?) in Italy.

For a number of years he was making a heck of a lot of money - with the money he made he purchased the family holiday home in Italy which belonged to my grandmother (where I used to get carted off to each year for my holidays) and his apartment in Stockholm. Things were going very well but he observed that what most people wanted back then were the big Hollywood films - he said that during this early 'boom' the Americans simply sat back, waited for the market to reach saturation point then stepped in cleaned up, kicking out the independents almost overnight.

I asked him about the Fletcher/Techno sleeves (he had stacks of them in his office) but any label I threw at him didn't ring any bells... He told me to talk to his son in Sweden who worked with him at the time. My uncle is well into his 70's btw.

When the video distribution market became dominated by the Americans he moved into porn where he claims to have made a lot of money. Again, all around the Scandinivian territories - He went into quite a bit of detail about this: visiting porn film sets in Denmark, encounters with Cicciolina and a whole lot more. Unfortunately, it's not quite so easy to get into these matters when you've got eight year old nieces and nephews riding around on bikes and playing football right next to you. (for the record, he seemed totally unphased by all of this - it was me who felt like "hold on, maybe we should discuss this all another time, somewhere more appropriate." - He left about half hour later...

I'll catch up with him again soon and track down my cousin sometime soon - I'm certain my cousin can give me a lot more info on the labels they dealt with - esp. the Fletcher/Techno connection.

One other good thing I found out: his 'vault' of u-matics and over 2000 vintage vhs tapes is, apparently, still there and in his new flat... Just like before, he doesn't seem to have thrown anything away (I really need to get back over to Stockholm)

If all goes well I may catch up with him again in the next few weeks.

EDIT:::

A couple of things I've remembered:

1) Arabic tapes - He dealt with someone in Italy who distributed tapes in Libya. - these tapes were subtitled in Arabic. (apparently he still has master tapes with Arabic subs) This doesn't explain the Arabic Intervisions, but it does explain where they may have ended up - again, I can ask him for more info on this when I see him.

2) The first tapes he saw back in 1979 were just one small spool of tape - I'm now thinking they were this elusive Philips format that's been discussed here quite a lot lately - I believe they were only one spool (am I right?)

Mahtaisiko jostain saada ostettua tuollaista kansilehtikartonkia A3-koossa?

BestSellers Pick Up Glub, Roma?

"I believe that my woman shouldn't work outside the home. When I come home and I'm tired from filming all day, I expect her to be there and make sure that everything is cool for me. You know, like drawing my bath and helping me into bed. That's the kind of job she had and, in return for it, she can bear my children and if any man talks bad to her, I'll hit him."

Ei löydy Uppotukkia kirjaston Frank-haulla, vaikka Yle Tallennepalvelun vhs on olemassa.
